The field handball international match Germany - Switzerland 1935 was played on May 19, 1935 in Augsburg. It was Switzerland's first international match.
prehistory
Most Germans viewed the game against Switzerland as an easy practice game. While the German national team had already played ten international matches, this was the Swiss team's first appearance on an international level. Only players from southern Germany were nominated for the international match by the handball department of the German Reich Association for Physical Exercise.
The Federal Gymnastics Association procured twelve red bibs with a white cross. The players had to buy the white trousers, black stockings and shoes themselves. The German sports authority took over the travel expenses and the accommodation .
Before the game
Several thousand people greet the Swiss players at the train station. They stayed in the Hotel Drei Mohren . The whole city was decorated with flags as if for a state reception.
Course of the game
After the game
In the evening there was a meal with both teams. It was decided that there would be a revenge in Switzerland in October.
Reactions
The trade journal handball wrote the following about Swiss performance:
All technical skills, catching and throwing in all positions, were just as familiar to the Swiss as our team. There were also no fundamental differences between the two teams in terms of tactics.
Three points decided the victory for Germany: The German game had a significantly higher speed, the considerably greater throwing power and the combinations could also be carried out in the briskest run.
