A Fuel Farm is the site -built warehouse for fuels to supply troops in maneuvers or in the operational area.

Since the use of motorized units in warfare with vehicles such as tanks , armored personnel carriers , tractors and trucks , as well as the emergence of helicopters and combat aircraft , the sufficient supply of military units with fuel has been a decisive prerequisite for a successful operation. As part of the fulfillment of this supply task, field tank farms are provisional gas stations in the field for the vehicles and aircraft of the armed forces directly or for tank trucks , which then bring the fuel to the units.

Field tank farms are also necessary if, for example, an airfield is occupied with aircraft for training or operational purposes in such a number that the normal permanently installed refueling and storage capacity is insufficient for the required intensity of use. Then an additional field tank farm will also be built, as is generally required for makeshift airfields or motorway emergency landing sites .

Field tank farms are supplied with fixed or temporarily laid pipelines , such as the NATO pipeline , or by tanker trucks.

Armies currently use collapsible tanks as temporary tanks . If possible, these are placed in artificially excavated pits to protect against the effects of weapons. Typical collapsible tank sizes in the Bundeswehr are 38 cubic meters and 300 cubic meters. A 38 cubic meter collapsible tank with 38,000 liters of fuel has the following dimensions: length: about 12.80 m, width: about 3.70 m, height: max. 1.10 m (depending on the level). In the NATO area , kerosene A1 is always stored , which is refined into the required fuel by means of additives .

Power levels

Field tank farms are defined by the daily maximum delivery quantity and the number of days for which the stored fuel supply is sufficient (storage level).

Danger

Because of their crucial importance for the continuation of the battle, field tank farms are a preferred target of the opposing artillery and air force .

Germany

In Germany, field tank farms are set up and operated by the pipeline pioneer companies of the special pioneer battalions 164 ( Husum ) and 464 ( Speyer ), each with 179 soldiers. The Speyer company consists of three trains , each of which can set up and operate a field tank farm.
