Felgueiras is a place and a former municipality in northeastern Portugal .
history
It is possible that people settled here in Roman times , as findings suggest. The current location may have been created during the medieval Reconquista . In 1436 King D. Duarte granted the town and his workers of the local iron ore mine some privileges.
Later, the manufacture of wax candles became an important industry here. The small factory, which was built in the 18th century and still exists today, presumably dates back to an older facility.
administration
Felgueiras was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Torre de Moncorvo . The community had 289 inhabitants on an area of 23.07 km² (as of June 30, 2011).
Two localities are in the area of the former municipality:
- Felgueiras
- Quintas do Corisco
With the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Felgueiras and Maçores were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Felgueiras e Maçores . Felgueiras is the seat of this newly formed municipality.
