Felix Roque

Felix E. Roque (* 1955/56 in Las Villas , Cuba ) has been the mayor of West New York in the US state of New Jersey since May 2011 .

Born in Cuba, Felix Roque came to the United States with his family in 1967 at the age of 11. In 1976 he joined the United States Army and was able to earn a Bachelor of Biology and Spanish from Norwich University through the GI Bill of Rights . He then studied medicine at the Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic . He currently serves as a military doctor with the rank of colonel and commandant of the 4215 Combat Support Hospital in Virginia .

In civil life Roque first worked in various hospitals, in 1998 he opened a private practice in West New York and is currently director of St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic . In 2009 Roque, spurred on by the high taxes in West New York, launched a campaign to recall Mayor Silverio Vega , but failed in April 2010. In the local elections on May 10, 2011, Roque's list won somewhat unexpectedly and Felix Roque took over the office of mayor shortly afterwards.

On October 25, 2011, Roque announced that in 2013 a Formula 1 Grand Prix would take place in West New York and neighboring Weehawken .
