Felix Solmsen

Felix Solmsen (born July 11, 1865 in Schneidemühl , † June 13, 1911 near Mehlem ) was a German Indo-Europeanist .

Life

Felix Solmsen studied Classical Philology and Comparative Linguistics at the Universities of Berlin and Leipzig . Johannes Schmidt , Karl Brugmann and August Leskien particularly shaped him among his academic teachers . The Leipzig School taught Solmsen the most important Indo-European languages , while in Berlin he introduced the philological specialization in grammatical problems. 1886 Solmsen in Leipzig with a thesis on Sigma in conjunction with nasal and cash and cash PhD , in the Journal of Comparative Linguistics Research (Volume 29, pages 59-124 and 329-358) appeared. Solmsen fell ill after completing his teaching degree in Halle and was only able to start his probationary year in 1891. He then worked at the teachers' seminar of the Francke Foundations in Halle.

Solmsen embarked on an academic career with his habilitation at the University of Bonn (1893). He initially worked as a private lecturer in comparative linguistics with special emphasis on the classical and Slavic languages ​​and was appointed associate professor in 1897. He turned down offers to the universities of Groningen (1903) and Strasbourg (1908). In 1907 he was appointed personal full professor in Bonn, and in 1909 full professor. He died on June 13, 1911 after falling from a moving train near Mehlem on the Rhine.

Felix Solmsen mainly dealt with the grammar, phonetics and etymology of the Slavic languages , Latin and Greek . His most important writings are the studies on the Latin history of sounds (Strasbourg 1894), the studies on the theory of Greek phonetics and verse (Strasbourg 1901) and the contributions to Greek word research (Strasbourg 1909), of which only one volume appeared. There were numerous lecture concepts and college books in his estate. One of these was published posthumously by his student Ernst Fraenkel ( Indo-European proper names as a mirror of cultural history , Heidelberg 1922).
