biography

Born near Greenwood, Mississippi , Robinson moved to Memphis, Tennessee when he was 16 , where he recorded his first single, Tennessee Woman, in 1957 . In 1959 he recorded As the Years Go Passing by for the first time , which was later covered several times.

In 1962, Robinson moved to Chicago . In 1967 he recorded Somebody Loan Me a Dime , which was to become his signature song. The cover version of Boz Scaggs sparked litigation in 1969 because Scaggs posed as a writer. The piece became a blues standard that many blues musicians have in their repertoire .

Robinson recorded the song again in 1974 for his highly regarded album Somebody Loan Me a Dime . For the next album I Hear Some Blues Downstairs (1977) Robinson was nominated for a Grammy Award ; it contained a new recording of As the Years Go Passing by .

Robinson played guitar on the original recording of Larry Davis ' Texas Flood . Davis later played guitar himself, but Robinson was the guitarist for Texas Flood , with Davis as singer and bass, plus James Booker on piano, David Dean on tenor saxophone, Booker Crutchfield on barrite saxophone and an unknown drummer.

In the 1970s, Robinson was jailed for negligent homicide in a car accident. Dismissed after nine months, he began playing in Chicago clubs again. Later he also gave guitar lessons.

Robinson died of a brain tumor in Rockford, Illinois in 1997.

Its title Somebody Loan Me a Dime was used in the film Blues Brothers ; the song is played when Jake ( John Belushi ) is arrested and released.
