Feríz Berki

Feríz Berki (born December 1, 1917 in Kotor , † January 7, 2006 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian Russian Orthodox pastor and archpriest .

Life

Berki's father was a dean - administrator of the Hungarian Orthodox Church District and the leading clergyman of the Hungarian Orthodox St. Mary's Congregation in Budapest.

After obtaining his university entrance qualification, his son Feríz completed a degree in Greek Orthodox theology in Athens / Greece. Doctor of theology, he was graduated with a thesis on the Eperjeser Orthodox theology. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Zagorsk Theological Academy of the Russian Orthodox Church .

Immediately after the end of the Second World War he was appointed clergyman of the Budapest Greek Orthodox Congregation, and soon afterwards he became head of the entire Hungarian Orthodox Church District. He saw his first and most important work in translating the Greek liturgy of his church into Hungarian . He provided an excellent translation of the liturgy book "Liturgikon".

After the Hungarian Orthodox Church joined the World Council of Churches , Berki also took part in the work and in the management of the Hungarian ecumenical movement . Through his participation in ecumenical events and the publication of lectures and essays in the “Theologische Rundschau” and “Der Seelsorger”, he enriched the diversity and unity of the Hungarian Christians.

Since its inception, Berki has been a member of the Christian Peace Conference and since 1960 participant in the All-Christian Peace Assemblies .

After a long illness, Feríz Berki died in January 2006 at the age of 88. The Hungarian churches said goodbye to the cleric with a memorial service in Budapest's St. Mary's Cathedral. His body was laid to rest on the same day in the Farkasréter cemetery.
