Ferdinand Anders

Ferdinand Anders (born October 15, 1930 in Leopoldstadt , Vienna ) is an Austrian historian and ethnologist .

life and work

Ferdinand Anders was born in 1930 in Leopoldstadt in Vienna, where he also graduated from elementary school and grammar school (Matura June 1949), attended the state and federal teacher training institute and studied history and ethnology at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna while working . In December 1957 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. In his dissertation "The Mayan Pantheon" Anders dealt with the Mayan religion.

Between 1951 and 1990 Anders was active in the public school service (first compulsory school, later at the Pedagogical Academy of the Federal Government and the Archdiocese of Vienna ) and in public education (Catholic Academy in Vienna). Ferdinand Anders' academic teachers included Professors Wilhelm Koppers , Robert Heine-Geldern , Dominik Wölfel and Benedikt . As an ethnohistorian with a focus on Mesoamerica , Anders attaches particular importance to a universal historical approach that pays greater attention to the native point of view.

On April 12, 1968 the habilitation and the granting of the license to teach as a university lecturer for ethnology with special consideration of Mexican studies and ethno-history took place . Anders then worked intensively on the Codices selecti (Central American manuscripts), with the series Bibliotheca linguistica americana and published the series Artes americanae and Fontes rerum mexicanarum. Furthermore, Anders initiated the most comprehensive collection of primary sources for the Mexican-Central American region. He deciphered and published all Maya manuscripts for the first time, thereby proving that the Mexican manuscripts, which had been regarded as Aztec until then, were largely Mixtec. His standard work Das Pantheon der Maya is recognized in the Handbook of Middle American Indians as "well illustrated, comprehensive description and discussion of the religious-ritual of ancient and modern Mayance speaking groups". One of his students, Maarten Jansen , dean and professor of archeology at the University of Leiden , the Netherlands, described his teacher in a commemorative publication on the occasion of Anders' 60th birthday with the words: “With him I found the ability, which in my opinion is a criterion is by which one recognizes a good teacher: to see the various current endeavors of the individual sciences in a large historical framework. "

Another focus of Anders' research activities is the person of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian von Habsburg (he supervised two dissertations in this context).

In addition, Anders published monographs on Alexander von Humboldt , Lukas Vischer , Eduard Mühlenpfordt , Moritz Rugendas , Eduard Seler , Manuel Orozco y Berra , Dominik Bilimek , Simon Leo Reinisch and Theobert Maler .

Anders was also active as a collector of manuscripts and figures ( muñecos ) made from paper made from amate (fig bast ) . In the continuation of his scientific studies on the natives of Central America, he dealt with the behavior of recent Indians and their relationship to official bodies.

In 1983 Anders organized the Lower Austrian provincial exhibition "Peru through the Millennia" at the Schallaburg , in 1988 he curated an exhibition about the Austrian by choice Johann Jakob von Tschudi , which was shown in Lower Austria and in Switzerland the following year. In the course of this work, Anders was able to discover the voice recordings of now extinct Brazilian Indian tribes by Johann Natterer in Basel, which were believed to have been lost due to the fire in the Hofburg in 1848 .

During the preparation of the exhibition Old Mexico: Mexican Magic Figures - Old Manuscripts Begin to Speak in Linz, Anders met Anton Watzl , who also accompanied him on a research trip to Uxmal and Palenque , Mexico , in 1989 and recorded his impressions in graphic form.

Anders also participated in exhibitions in Hardegg, Riegersburg, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Augsburg, Leiden, Essen, Schaffhausen, Vienna, Trieste and Munich.

In the 2001/02 winter semester, Anders ended his lectures at the University of Vienna in order to devote himself more intensively to his research and to supervise doctoral students.
