Ferdinand Bellan
Ferdinand Florian Bellan (born June 16, 1897 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † November 1976 in Slough , Berkshire , United Kingdom ) was an Austrian film architect and draftsman for German and British films.
Life
Bellan attended art college in Vienna and then went to Berlin (1919) . There he was first brought to film as a set painter and draftsman and was involved in these functions in Ernst Lubitsch's productions Sumurun and Anna Boleyn in 1920 . Bellan continued to be active in this field, his best-known and most extensive work he delivered in 1931 with the drawings for Erik Charell's film operetta The Congress Dances .
From 1924 on, Bellan also took part as a film architect from time to time. Apart from his sole work on the film grotesque Theodor Huber's miraculous stories, he was mostly responsible for the execution of scenic designs by other artists (especially Alexander Ferenczy ). As a result of the seizure of power , Bellan returned to Austria before he left Vienna in June 1933 and moved to Great Britain. There he was hired as a set designer by European producer emigrants such as Ludovico Toeplitz, Gabriel Pascal and Alexander Korda , but mostly remained active in a subordinate function. As a construction contractor and simple co-architect, Ferdinand Bellan participated - often unnamed - in setting up various high-quality entertainment films from the Korda production, including Danger on the Doro Pass , Four Feathers and The Thief of Baghdad .
In numerous other top productions, including Major Barbara, The Third Man and Dream of My Life , he had to be content with the position of assistant production designer. In films like Becket , Cleopatra , The Quiller Memorandum - Danger from Darkness , The Great Katharina, Mörder GmbH and Queen for a Thousand Days , his job was that of a landscape painter. In 1970 Bellan retired into private life.
