Life

Origin and education

During his youth he visited various yeshivot , including the one in the former Israeli settlement of Jamit on the Sinai Peninsula . He then attended Bar-Ilan University , from which he has a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in talmudic studies. Political career

In the 2000s, Ben-Ari tried several times to enter the Knesset with various parties, but failed each time because of the threshold clause . In the election to the 18th Knesset , he finally succeeded in entering the Israeli parliament as a member of the National Union . During the legislative period, he mainly drew attention to himself through racist and provocative remarks against Palestinians and left-wing Israelis.

In the 2013 Knesset election , Ben-Ari ran with the Otzma LeJisra'el party, which he and Arieh Eldad had founded , but failed to pass the 2% hurdle and thus lost his seat in parliament.

As a representative of Otzma Jehudit , Ben-Ari was the top candidate for the parliamentary elections in Israel in 2019 . However, the Israeli Supreme Court followed the arguments of Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, who accused Ben-Ari of promoting racism, and ruled on March 18, 2019 that he should be removed from the list of candidates.

Private life

Ben-Ari lives in the Israeli settlement of Karnei Shomron . He is Orthodox Jewish , married and has nine children.

Controversy

In 2009 Ben-Ari sent a letter to several Israeli politicians in which he wrote that the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. in Israel was an insult to Holocaust survivors. In September 2010, Ben-Ari declared, "For every death on our side, we must kill five hundred [Palestinians], not just six." In January 2011, Ben-Ari described left-wing Israelis as "bacilli", "enemies of Israel" and "traitors, who would have to be pursued by all means ”.

In March 2012, Ben-Ari was banned from entering the United States because of his ties to a terrorist organization - the Kach .

Before Pope Francis I visited Israel in the summer of 2014, he protested together with Baruch Marzel and other right-wing extremists with signs with slogans in Hebrew such as “The accursed Christianity” (Hebrew הנצרות הארורה) and “Unclean Pope, leave our holy land! “(Hebrew אפיפיור טמא צא מארצנו הקדושה) were to be read. On May 15, 2016, Ben-Ari and Im Tirtzu supporters took part in a demonstration against Israeli Arabs, who traditionally commemorate the Nakba on that day . Later he scornfully announced, “We have come here to wish [the Arabs] a happy Nakba festival. They howl because they didn't manage to destroy us. "

In the summer of 2016, he opposed the court case against Elor Azaria , who on March 24, 2016 in Hebron shot and killed a Palestinian assassin who was already lying on the ground. In the course of a demonstration, Ben-Ari was attacked with tear gas by masked left-wing radicals .
