Franz Ferdinand Benary
Franz Simon Ferdinand Benary (born March 22, 1805 in Kassel ; died February 7, 1880 in Berlin ) was a German orientalist and exegete of Jewish origin.
Life
Ferdinand Benary studied theology and oriental languages in Bonn and Halle from 1824, in Berlin from 1827 and completed his habilitation in Berlin in 1829. He converted to Christianity in 1829. In Berlin in 1831 he was appointed associate professor for Old Testament exegesis.
Of his works, the edition of “Nalodaya” (with Latin translation, Berlin 1830) and the text “De Hebraeorum leviratu” (das. 1835) should be emphasized. Benary gave an account of the prevention of the publication of a critical journal by the Eichhorn ministry in cooperation with Professors Heinrich Gustav Hotho and Wilhelm Vatke by publishing the relevant files.
Franz Ferdinand Benary died a few weeks before his 75th birthday on February 7, 1880 in Berlin. His grave, which has not been preserved, was in one of the cemeteries in front of Hallesches Tor . It is not known exactly which one.
He was the brother of Ernst Benary and Agathon Benary .
