Ferdinand Gluud
Hans Peter Ferdinand Gluud (born October 22, 1875 in Bremen , † October 17, 1913 in Berlin-Johannisthal ) was a German captain and airship commander of LZ 18 .
biography

Gluud was the son of a master carpenter of the same name from Bremen. He attended secondary school until 1891. He then completed an apprenticeship as a seaman and navigator. From 1899 he was 4th then chief officer and then captain at North German Lloyd . He was captain of the sailing school ship Herzogin Sophie Charlotte .
After Gluud took part in the Zeppelin study expedition to Spitzbergen in 1910 as first officer of the steamer Mainz , Ferdinand von Zeppelin hired him as an excellent nautical and meteorological navigator. He transferred the entire operation of his airships in Friedrichshafen to him . Zeppelin and Gluud soon enjoyed a close relationship of trust and the Zeppelin airship fleet was expanded. As leader of the airships, he was also able to run over his hometown of Bremen.
The Zeppelin LZ 18 was a rigid airship and, under the designation "L 2", the second naval airship of the Imperial Navy , which was to be put into operation before the First World War . In October 1913, "L 2" was easily transferred from Friedrichshafen to Johannisthal. On the day it was handed over to the Navy, October 17, 1913, the airship exploded due to a faulty construction at a height of 200 meters and burned out completely. The cause of the accident is assumed that the hydrogen carrier gas diffusing from the gas cells has collected in the passage. Since it could not escape upwards, it was sucked into one of the machine gondolas by the negative pressure that resulted from the travel movement, where it ignited. All crew members were killed.
Gluud was married and had a daughter.
