Ferdinand Knab
Ferdinand Knab (born June 12, 1834 in Würzburg , † November 3, 1902 in Munich ) was a German painter .
Knab was initially a student of Heideloff in Nuremberg , where he was practically employed in construction for two years, and went to Munich in 1859 to devote himself to architectural painting. He attended the schools Arthur von Rambergs and Pilotys and went to Italy in 1868 . Since his return he has had a preference for motifs from this country and in the meantime was often busy with work for King Ludwig II's winter garden in the Munich residence and for Linderhof Palace .
His pictures are characterized by a poetic conception; He mostly subordinates architectural motifs to scenic ones. He loved colorful evening moods that pour their magic over ruins and mighty groups of trees. His watercolors are of particular value. The " Münchener Bilderbogen " contain a number of splendid cuts based on Knab's drawings. Some of his larger pictures are:
- Romanesque architecture (abandoned monastery churchyard, 1862)
- Roman fragments (1866)
- Roman tomb (1866)
- Castle ruins from the Renaissance period (1866)
- In the park (1868)
- Monastery courtyard with fountain (1868)
- Roman landscape (1872)
- Italian palace garden (1873)
- Roman thermal baths and ruins in the Campagna
