Ferdinand Möhring
Ferdinand Möhring (born January 18, 1816 in Alt Ruppin , † May 1, 1887 in Wiesbaden ) was a German composer , song writer , conductor and organist .
Life
Ferdinand Möhring was born in Alt Ruppin as the son of the master carpenter Johann Friedrich Möhring and spent his childhood and youth in Neuruppin , where he attended high school. In 1830 he entered the trade school in Berlin , where he completed an apprenticeship as a builder at the express request of his father . He broke off this and entered the Institute for Church Music . In 1835 his first motet was performed.
His pursuit of all-round musical education prompted him to enter the musical department of the Academy of the Arts, where he studied from 1837 to 1840. Here he mainly composed instrumental music, including his symphony in B flat major in 1838, which was premiered by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in the Leipzig Gewandhaus . On January 26, 1840, he gave his final concert with a fellow student in the hall of the Berlin Singakademie. He then moved to Saarbrücken , where he was appointed director of the men's choir and organist at the Ludwigskirche .
From 1842 he traveled to Paris, where he made the acquaintance of Frédéric Chopin . In 1844 he was appointed royal music director and in 1845 he was appointed organist at the parish church of St. Marien and music teacher at the Neuruppin grammar school.
From 1845 to 1874 he was music director of the Altruppin men's choir, which has been named after its long-time director since 1904.
In 1857 he married Hedwig Schulz, the daughter of a painter, and from 1873 lived as a freelance artist.
In 1876 he moved to Wiesbaden, where he made friends with the artists Gustav Freytag , Franz Abt and Friedrich von Bodenstedt . Ferdinand Möhring died in Wiesbaden in 1887, where he found his final resting place in the north cemetery .

Honors
A memorial by Max Wiese commemorates the music teacher and composer Ferdinand Möhring in his place of birth Alt Ruppin . It was unveiled in 1897.
The sculptor Hermann Schies created a monument to the composer for Wiesbaden.
A street in Wiesbaden and Neuruppin is named after him.
