Ferdinand Möllmann (born January 2, 1791 in Lüttringhausen , † November 20, 1854 in Iserlohn ) was a German wholesaler and early industrialist.

Life

His father Johann Heinrich Möllmann was a businessman in Lüttringhausen. His mother Anna Hedwig (née Goldenberg) also came from a merchant family.

In 1807 Möllmann became a commercial apprentice at the trading company Schmidt & Woeste in Iserlohn. He worked there from 1812 as a trade commissioner. Together with his colleague F. Ballot, he took over the Schwarz & Hellmann trading company. The company was renamed Ballot & Co. in 1818, which became Ballot, Möllmann & Co. in 1823. In the same year Möllmann married Eleonore Overhoff. She was the daughter of the businessman Johann Stephan Overhoff and his wife Johanna (née Kissing). With this marriage Möllmann joined the richest family in the area at the time. His wife's father invested in the Möllmanns company, as did another relative through marriage, Johann Hermann Kissing. Kissing and Möllmann founded the company of the same name, which took over the trading company Ballot, Möllmann & Co. in 1826.

This company became one of the most important commission trading houses in Westphalia and far beyond in the 19th century. Kissing soon withdrew from the day-to-day business, so that Möllmann initially managed it alone and later together with his son-in-law and son Carl Möllmann.

Initially Möllmann concentrated on business in the German Customs Union . However, he began to expand the trading company to Italy and Spain as early as 1830 . The business area eventually extended to Russia and Latin America . Möllmann was particularly well represented in Colombia. The original core business lost its importance after the First World War .

Kissing & Möllmann was also directly involved in industrial production since 1826 . The company ran an important bronze goods factory in Iserlohn. Cast and embossed items were made. Initially lamps were made, later the company focused on coffee grinders and fittings.

The company manufactured these products until the early 1980s.

In addition to the company in Iserlohn, Möllmann founded the Bösperde rolling mill in Menden in 1827 . In 1843 he took over the majority of the Hüstener union . Since then, the company has been managed from the company's headquarters in Iserlohn. In addition, Möllmann has been involved in the Frohe Aussicht colliery near Unna since 1841 . Kissing & Möllmann also participated in the alum boiling hut near Hagen .
