Ferdinand Probst

Ferdinand Probst (born March 28, 1816 in Ehingen an der Donau , † December 26, 1899 in Breslau ) was a Christian scholar, author and rector of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau . Among other things, he wrote the two-volume Catholic Moral Theology .

Life

Probst was the son of the innkeeper Christoph Probst (bear host in Ehingen and city councilor) and attended grammar school in Ehingen until 1836, then studied Catholic theology in Tübingen and was ordained a priest on September 16, 1840. He was initially vicar in Ellwangen and from autumn 1841 repetition at the Wilhelmsstift in Tübingen, where he was encouraged to do scientific work by Karl Joseph von Hefele and Johannes von Kuhn . On December 22, 1843 he became pastor of Pfärrich in the Württemberg Allgäu and stayed there until 1864. His doctorate in theology took place on November 25, 1851.

From 1852 he conducted research in the field of liturgy , especially the history of liturgy. In this main field of his scientific activity he published a number of books and treatises and extended his historical research to the field of catechesis, preaching and ecclesiastical discipline.

In autumn 1864 he became full professor of pastoral theology at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau , on April 16, 1886 at the same time cathedral chapter . In 1889/90 he was rector of the University of Breslau. In 1890 he was appointed papal house prelate and in 1896 provost of the cathedral. Due to health problems, he withdrew from teaching. He died on December 26, 1899 in Breslau.

He was the brother of pastor Josef Probst, known as a geologist .
