Fernando de Mendonça d'Oliveira Neves (* 1946 or 1947 ) is a Portuguese diplomat and politician.

Career

Neves studied law at the University of Lisbon and entered the diplomatic service in November 1974. He was initially embassy attaché to the Portuguese permanent mission to the United Nations and the permanent mission in Brussels . In May 1997, Neves was appointed Foreign Minister's Mission Representative for East Timor , and in the first half of 2000 he became the spokesman for the Portuguese EU Council Presidency .

Neves was Portuguese Ambassador to Angola (February 26, 2001 - September 27, 2002) and Ireland (October 9, 2002 - January 30, 2005) before becoming Portuguese Ambassador to the Netherlands on February 1, 2005 . However, in March of the same year, Neves was appointed the new Secretary of State for European Affairs. He held the office until 2006. Other offices were President of the Institute for Economic Cooperation and Director of the Foreign Policy Department of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union.

In 2019, Neves received the Ordem de Timor-Leste (Medal) from East Timor's President Francisco Guterres for his services to East Timor.
