The Gütersloh telecommunications tower is a 90 meter high telecommunications tower belonging to Deutsche Telekom AG, which was built by Deutsche Post AG in the city center of Gütersloh across from Gütersloh main station from 1993 to 1994 .
Conflicts
There were several conflicts between the city, the residents and Deutsche Post AG over the construction of the telecommunications tower. In 1983, the Oberpostdirektion Münster submitted plans for a 90 meter high telecommunications tower for the first time, as they were looking for an alternative to underground cables. They wanted to build this on their own site near the city center of Gütersloh, but the city declined the application for visual reasons. Another location was out of the question, however, as the locations proposed by the city were either outside the radio link over the Bielefelder Pass or the post office should have acquired it first. The objection to the ban was rejected on February 28, 1985. On April 9, 1985, the Post moved to the Minden Administrative Court, which upheld the lawsuit on August 25, 1987. The town councilors appealed the judgment, but on March 14, 1991 the judgment was upheld by the Higher Administrative Court on the grounds that the townscape of Gütersloh was not particularly worthy of protection. This allowed the telecommunications tower to be built.
When construction began, a citizens' initiative against electrosmog was formed that wanted to stop construction for fear of damage to health. On November 23, 1993, however, the district president in Detmold finally decided that the telecommunications tower could be built.
Others
A nesting box for peregrine falcons is attached to the tower. This is currently the only known breeding site for the peregrine falcon in the district.
