Ferranti Limited was a British electrical engineering company founded in 1885 by Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti .

The company manufactured a wide range of electrical equipment (from electric cookers to computers and radars) at several locations in England ( London , Manchester ) and Scotland ( Aberdeen , Glasgow ). Ferranti also appeared as a manufacturer of integrated circuits . Over the years Ferranti has established branches in many European countries (e.g. France, Germany, Italy, Belgium) and in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. After the failed attempt to gain a foothold in the American market, the company had so large liabilities that it went bankrupt in 1994 . Parts of the bankruptcy estate were taken over by the former English General Electric Company , and many branches were closed. The headquarters in Manchester and the German branch were taken over by the French Syseca .

The company produced the Ferranti Mark I computer from 1951 and later the Atlas computer from 1962 , both in collaboration with the University of Manchester . Packard Electric was acquired in 1954 .

The company was best known among electronics engineers for its integrated Ferranti ZN428 circuit, a simple, microprocessor-compatible digital-to-analog converter .

Lasers and Photonics

In 1963, the special components division produced the first commercially available European gas laser . From these activities in 1970 the company Ferranti Photonics Ltd. emerged. In 1974 the company introduced the first claims to CO with the Ferranti MF400 2 - Industrial laser ago. After the Ferranti group went bankrupt, the subsidiary continued to operate. A management buy-out led to the establishment of Laser Ecosse Ltd. in 1990 . , which filed for bankruptcy in 2000. In 2005 Ferranti Photonics also filed for bankruptcy and was liquidated.
