Ferryland is a municipality ( town ) on the island of Newfoundland, part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The place is located in the southeast of the Avalon Peninsula , about 65 kilometers south of St. John's .

Surname

Ferryland was called Farilhao by Portuguese fishermen and Forillon ("outside the mainland") by French . This was later anglicized to the current name Ferryland . Other scientists suspect that the name is a corruption of the name Veralum, as the English city of St Albans was formerly called. This should not be confused with Forillon National Park in Québec , which still bears the French name.

history

Ferryland was established as a station for fishermen in the late 16th century, but was used earlier by the French (from 1504), Spanish and Portuguese. These fishermen came from the east coast to the south coast in summer because the fishing season started a month earlier. In the 1550s, the settlement was one of the most important fishing ports in Newfoundland and recognized by Sir Walter Raleigh .

The land was leased by the London and Bristol Company in the first decade of the 17th century ; the surrounding area has been added to the location of a number of short lived settlements such as Cuper's Cove , Bristol's Hope and Renews and the South Falkland Colony . In 1620 or 1621 the territory was given to George Calvert , the first Lord Baltimore to take possession of William Vaughan and who invested over £ 40,000 over time. Vaughan brought the first settlers to Ferryland in 1617, but the Welsh people left the settlement two years later.

Calvert commissioned Captains Wynne and Powell to visit the settlement and report on the progress, whereupon Wynne found several buildings (forming a street), a sea wall, a common room, a forge, a shipyard, a brewery and described a defense system. Things like wheat, barley, oats, beans, peas, cabbage, carrots, and kale were planted after some land was cleared. This colony became the first permanently surviving settlement in Newfoundland and grew to a population of 100 (1625). In 1622, Calvert's concession was confirmed and extended by a royal fief; the province of Avalon with Ferryland as the main town was established.

In 1627 Sir George Calvert came to Ferryland with his family because he noticed that the colony was not going well. He wrote regularly to King Charles I , complaining about attacks by French soldiers and asking for protection from British ships. When Lady Baltimore decided in 1629, out of consideration for her health, to leave Ferryland and her son Cecil decided to follow, the Lord Baltimore also decided to give up Ferryland and go to Virginia . Many settlers came with him.

About eight years after Calvert's departure, Sir David Kirke took over the colony of Newfoundland on royal commission . It was given to him as a fief; this as compensation, because after a peace agreement he had to return the booty of 13 captured French ships.

Nothing is left of the mansion where Baltimore and Kirke once lived in monarchist pomp, although it was very expensive. In 1673 the building was destroyed when the Dutch sacked Ferryland. The proximity of the sea and the exposed location during winter storms reduced the remains to a pile of ruins. They later served the fishermen as a quarry.

present

The 2016 census showed a population of 414 inhabitants for the municipality. In the previous census in 2001, 2006 and 2011, the population was 607, 529 and 465, respectively. The population trend continues to decline. The area of Ferryland is 13.62 km². The place is located on the Irish Loop , a popular travel route. The main attraction of Ferryland is the Colony of Avalon , an archaeological excavation site with an attached museum, where some of Avalon's past is presented. In addition, the place is at times a tourist magnet, as you can watch icebergs passing by from land (sometimes several hundred per season). In addition, the city now has a function as a regional administrative center.
