The Festival of Youth is a political festival by young people for young people, which is organized irregularly by the Socialist German Workers' Youth (SDAJ) .

Founded until 1988

From 1976 to 1988 the festival took place every two years as a joint event of the SDAJ and the MSB "Spartakus" .

At the 1978 festival, u. a. Jutta Weinhold , Snowball , Udo Lindenberg and the Puhdys , it attracted a total of around 180,000 visitors.

At the other festivals there were: Jimmy Cliff , Klaus Lage , Extrabreit , Alphaville , Nina Simone , as well as groups of students who had previously been selected as the best “newcomers” at rock festivals of the SDAJ district organizations.

In addition to the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund, the youth festival also took place in the Wedaustadion in Duisburg.

The festivals donated their income for political and social purposes.

Because of the failure of communism in the east, the festival was less and less attended and disappeared into insignificance.

Since 2008

For the first time in 20 years, a youth festival was held from May 9th to May 12th . It took place in Cologne under the motto "Time to fight - Time to celebrate: Together against a lack of apprenticeships and a decline in education" .

In 2010, a youth festival with around 1000 visitors took place in Cologne's youth park. There were workshops on the topics, among other things

  • Resistance against the armed forces,
  • Downsizing through the "Bologna Process",
  • Demolition of democracy - for whom and how to fight against it?
  • Antifa workshop,
  • How does the union organize young people? and
  • What are communists doing in a crisis?
