Fethiye Çakıl

Fethiye Çakıl (born September 4, 1933 in Kartal ; † March 22, 2009 in Stuttgart ) was a Turkish citizen who had lived in Stuttgart since 1965. In 2007 she received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany "for her outstanding commitment to the integration of Turkish women and her great commitment to the German Red Cross " .

Life

Fethiye Çakıl lived in Germany since 1965 . In 1966 she organized the first Turkish lessons with Turkish teachers in Germany. She was also involved in the Turkish Parents' Council, as its chairman from 1966 to 1983, for example, organizing information events for Turkish parents of children of school age about the German school system .

From 1977 to 1983, Çakıl was a deputy member of the Stuttgart City Council for Foreigners . During this time she was also the spokesperson for the Turkish women of the Turkish workers' welfare. She was one of the founders of the Türk Okul Aile Birlikleri Federasyonu and the Turkish Women's Association Stuttgart ( Stuttgart Türk Kadınlar Derneği ), of which she was chairman for many years.

From 1980 to 1983 she organized seminars on the subject of “Problems of Young Turkish Girls” and sometimes took in girls who had fled their families at home.

In the 1990s Fethiye Çakıl became a member of the Cancer Sick Foundation in Turkey and participated in collections after personal strokes of fate (her older daughter Hilal Soylu died of cancer in 1990 at the age of 32) . Furthermore, she ensured that various integrative courses and seminars were held, now at the Stuttgart Adult Education Center, in health authorities as well as youth and women's shelters.

At the end of the 1990s / beginning of the 2000s, Fethiye Çakıl organized a collaboration between the German Red Cross (DRK) and the Turkish Women's Association, which resulted in an integration course "Getting older in Germany" offered by the DRK , which is still taking place today.

Honors

By Stuttgart Mayor Wolfgang Schuster , she was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in the year of 2007. She was the first Turkish migrant of the first generation to receive this award.
