Fields of Science and Technology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fields of Science and Technology ( FOS ) is a classification of branches of science established by the OECD .

Attempts to classify the various sciences have resulted from the need to statistically collect data on research institutions, research results, etc. and to make them internationally comparable. One of the resulting systematics of the branches of science, which is binding for statisticians, is the Fields of Science and Technology systematics established by the OECD in 2002 . In a version revised in 2007 ( Revised Fields of Science and Technology ) it groups the sciences as follows (the German translations are taken from the Austrian Systematics of Science Branches 2012 (ÖFOS 2012) , which is based on the FOS ):

  1. Natural Sciences ( Naturwissenschaften )

In the ÖFOS 2012, the classifications were further adapted and expanded to three digits: “To ensure international comparability, instead of the no longer applicable 2-digit code, the next level was the new 3-digit system (groups) of the international New Fields of Science (FOS) adopted. So that the national circumstances can also be dealt with more precisely in the new Austrian scientific branch systematics, the 3-digit code has been given further subgroups (4-digit codes), taking into account the explanations of the international classification. The fields of work (keywords) listed in the alphabet with the associated 6-digit characters serve to describe research activities (e.g. research projects) and / or to record the main scientific activities of a survey unit of R&D surveys. (Revision status of the index: August 2017) "
