Filial church St. Johann im Walde

The Roman Catholic branch church St. Johann im Walde stands in a forest clearing near Stresweg in the municipality of Irschen . The church, first mentioned in 1242, belongs to the parish of Irschen . St. Johann im Walde used to be a place of pilgrimage to which processions from foreign parishes came three times a year. Until 1928, a ram sacrifice took place here on St. John's Day, which was supposed to protect against sheep flocks and hailstorms.

Building description

The church is a single-nave baroque building built around 1600 with a low, semicircular apse and an arched vestibule. The roof turret with a bell from the beginning of the 13th century is crowned by an onion cap. There is a small sacristy annex in the southeast corner . The interior is vaulted by a shallow barrel. The ceiling paintings show the baptism of Jesus and the boat trip on the Sea of ​​Galilee .

Facility

The high altar, created around 1670 to 1680, shows the decapitation of John the Baptist on the altar panel . The paintings on the pulpit basket from the second half of the 18th century depict the four evangelists . In the triumphal arch there are console figures of the Apostles Peter and Paul from the end of the 17th century. The church is also equipped with a clothed processional figure of the Mother of God with the child kept in a baroque display case, a carved St. John's bowl from the 17th century and pictures from the end of the 18th century with the "Seven Falls of Jesus".

The organ built by Elias Protzer in 1737 on the swinging west gallery originally stood in the parish church of Irschen.
