Philip "Filip" Michel Frans Dewinter (born September 11, 1962 in Bruges ) is a Belgian politician . In 2006 he became Chairman of the Vlaams Belang (VB) parliamentary group and a member of the Flemish Parliament .

Dewinter's maternal grandfather was active in the Resistance during World War II . His father, then a medical student, was a Nazi slave laborer .

Dewinter has been politically active since his school days in Bruges . In 1978, when he was sixteen, he founded the Vlaamse Scholieren Actie Groep , which later became the Nationalist Jong Student Association . In 1982 he moved to Antwerp to study political and social science at the University of Antwerp . He became a member of the Nationalist Student Association (NSV). In 1983 he joined the then Vlaams Blok . Two years later he moved to university and studied journalism at the Erasmus commercial college .

He quickly made a career in Vlaams Blok and became its parliamentary group leader in 1992. He also holds this position at Vlaams Belang. He has been a councilor in Antwerp and a Flemish MP since 1995.

Dewinter is married and has three daughters.

In 2010 he attended a Likud- organized conference in Israel on the fight against terrorism.

A far-right activist was sentenced to five years in prison in 2014 for plotting the murder of Filip Dewinter and hoping to drag Belgium into civil war.
