Life

Van Stavele made a career in the army of Charles V , especially in the Italian wars . On May 16, 1550 he was promoted to grootmeester of the Dutch artillery. On November 17, 1555, Charles V appointed him to his Council of State in Brussels. In January 1556 he was accepted into the Order of the Golden Fleece in Antwerp . Philip II granted him a one-time payment of 15,000 écus . He enjoyed the trust of the monarch and of Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle , who appointed him governor of Artois in 1558 .

In March 1560, Margaret of Parma, the governor of the Habsburg Netherlands , sent him on a diplomatic mission to England. He was supposed to persuade Elizabeth I of England to give up her policy of protection against the Huguenots . His engagement contributed to an agreement between Elizabeth I and Francis II of France on July 6, 1560. After his return to the Spanish Netherlands at the end of June 1560, Filips van Stavele was informed of the opposition of the Dutch nobility. He came into conflict with Granvelle. Henri Pirenne attributed to him great influence on William I of Orange and Lamoral of Egmond . In 1563 he withdrew to his possessions in France. After his death in 1575, his widow received outstanding allowances from his time on the State Council.
