Film magazine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A film magazine or interchangeable magazine is understood to be a replaceable cassette that contains film material for use with a camera .

meaning

By using a film magazine, a camera with more than one type of film can be used practically at the same time, since changing the film magazine on the camera is faster than changing the film in the camera. This changing device also enables the use of more than one type of film (e.g. black and white and color) simultaneously without having to carry several cameras. The removability of the film magazine allows a more flexible use of the beam path of the camera. In photography, for example, film magazines for instant film , focusing screens for detailed image assessment and, in recent years, digital backs have also been offered.

Before removing the film magazine from the camera, a magazine slide must be inserted into the magazine, which protects the film from exposure when the magazine is removed.

photography

For roll film

Film magazines for photography are primarily found in medium format cameras , e.g. B. at Hasselblad , Mamiya , Rollei , Bronica , Kiev , Contax . Attempts to introduce film magazines into 35mm cameras, for example the Contarex from Zeiss Ikon or the Rollei models SL2000F and 3003, were not particularly successful.

There are also roll film magazines for large format cameras , whereby the maximum possible recording format of these cameras can often not be used. The widest roll film of type 120/220 still available on the market measures 56 mm.

For sheet film

The sheet film magazine represents a special form. This is primarily used in floor , specialist or large format cameras . One or (in the case of double cassettes) two flat films can thus be inserted into the camera in a light-tight manner.

For the formats 9x12cm and 4x5 "there is a standardized sheet film magazine, the international back , which can be used today with almost all modern large-format cameras of this format.

There are also adapters for medium format cameras for the use of flat film magazines.

In the reprophotography or internegatives in the photo lab with the enlarger are likewise employed sheet film magazines. For the use of chemical film material in X-ray technology for medical diagnosis or in the technical field, flexible film cassettes are sometimes used.

cinematography

Film magazines can also be found in Kinè cameras , and they were even used in the Super 8 area. Those that do not have a magazine slide due to their design are usually attached with the so-called interchangeable bag . In the professional area , you do without it in favor of handling and thus lose the small piece of film visible in the connection area.

With the digital cinema camera there is no need for film magazines - there is unlimited recording directly via cable. Classic 35 mm film magazines hold a maximum of 10 minutes.
