description

The Filzige Pfeifenstrauch is a 2 to 3 meter high shrub with cinnamon-brown, later flaking bark . Young shoots are sparsely hairy or almost glabrous. The leaves are simple and have a 5 to 8 millimeter long petiole. The leaf blade is ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 4 to 10 centimeters long and 2 to 5 centimeters wide, long pointed with a broad wedge-shaped or rounded base and serrated leaf margin. The upper side of the leaf is dark green and sparsely hairy or glabrous, the underside is densely tomentose. Five to seven pairs of nerves are formed.

The flowers are five to seven in clusters with a 5 to 10 centimeter long, hairless spindle. The individual flowers stand on stems 6 to 11 millimeters long. They are 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide and very fragrant. The calyx is more or less bare and has 4 to 5 millimeters long, 2.5 to 3.5 millimeters wide, egg-shaped sepals. The white petals are arranged crosswise, obovate-oblong, 5 to 10 millimeters long and 5 to 8 millimeters wide. The 7 millimeter long stylus is bare and two-thirds overgrown. The 20 to 25 stamens reach a length of up to 8 millimeters. The discus is bare. The fruits are elliptical, 1 centimeter long and 0.7 centimeter diameter capsule fruits . The seeds are 4 millimeters in size. The species blooms from June to July, the fruits ripen from August to September.

Distribution and ecology

The natural range is in Tibet , Bhutan and India in Sikkim and in Jammu and Kashmir . The species grows in thickets in cool, moist forests at altitudes of 2500 to 4400 meters on acidic to slightly alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny locations. It loves warmth and is moderately frost hardy.
