Finley Peter Dunne

Finley Peter Dunne (born July 10, 1867 in Chicago , Illinois , † April 24, 1936 in New York ) was an American writer and journalist.

Life

Dunne, the son of Irish immigrants, attended high school in Chicago and then worked for various daily newspapers.

Dunne became known through the character of the Irish innkeeper Mr. Martin Dooley, who criticized contemporary events with humor and sharpness in Irish dialect. The stories first appeared as a column in the Chicago Evening Post from about 1890 , but soon gained national attention. About 700 episodes had appeared by the end of the First World War . Many of them have also been published in book form.

In 1908 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .

From 1902 Dunne was married to Margaret Abbott , the first American Olympic champion. Among their four children was the screenwriter and director Philip Dunne .
