Fintenkapelle in Bergweiler

The Catholic Fintenkapelle in Bergweiler , a local community in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate , was probably built in the 17th century. The field chapel , dedicated to St. Helena , to the east of the village, is a protected cultural monument . It is known as a pilgrimage chapel for sick children.

The Fintenkapelle, named after the Finkenhof, is mentioned for the first time in a visitation protocol in 1669 . It was repaired in 1717, as can be seen from an inscription on a stone cross and a bell .

The plastered quarry stone building is 4.75 meters wide and 7.80 meters long. It has only one window axis and a three-sided choir closure . To the left of the arched west portal there is an outside pulpit so that the pastor could preach to the faithful gathered in the open field in front of the chapel. The six-sided open roof turret with a bell has sloping wooden pillars and a curly helmet topped with a cross. A flat ceiling completes the interior.

The simple altar from the 17th century with twisted columns, angel decoration and cartilage comes from the time it was built.

In 2004 the chapel was renovated by local volunteers.
