Firas Alshater (born March 27, 1991 in Damascus ) is a Syrian actor, freelance journalist, author and YouTuber . He has been running his YouTube channel ZUKAR since September 2015 .

Life

Syria

Firas Alshater grew up in Damascus and studied acting there. In 2011 he was one of the co-organizers of the first demonstrations against the Assad government and for a free Syria.

In order to document the development in Syria, to counter the propaganda of the state television and to educate the people, Alshater got himself a camera. He also helped western journalists get to Syria as unnoticed as possible and supported them in reporting. On the basis of statements and contributions critical of the regime, he was persecuted by the Assad regime, arrested four times and held and tortured for almost nine months. For his own safety, he had to leave Damascus in October 2012, lived briefly in Turkey and then in northern Syria. In Raqqa he was then held prisoner by Islamist groups because he also made their crimes public.

Germany

To finish editing the film Syria Inside by his late friend Tamer Alawan, Alshater finally went to Germany. Together with the German film producer Jan Heilig, he completed work on the film and published it at the end of 2013.

Alshater has lived in Berlin since May 2013; in the same year he received asylum in Germany. Here he worked as a freelance TV journalist for Arab broadcasters and produced his own short films. Together with Heilig, he started the series “ZUKAR-Stückchen” on the YouTube channel ZUKAR in January 2016 , whose first video was Who are these Germans? went viral and was viewed over 2.5 million times on YouTube and Facebook (as of April 2016). Since then, Alshater has been considered "Germany's first refugee Youtuber". Time magazine selected Alshater as one of ten Next Generation Leaders .

As a result, he was seen in many different television programs, including a. in the ARD buffet , the ARD night magazine or Markus Lanz . Thanks to his videos, Alshater was also mentioned in international media, such as Canal + , Al Jazeera or the international formats of Deutsche Welle .

Alshater can also be seen in the “search racism, find truth” campaign. This action was brought into being by the organization “Refugees Welcome” in order to place short clips in front of YouTube videos with right-wing extremist content, in which refugees can refute the prejudices that follow.

Alshater is currently producing more YouTube videos and is working on his autobiography , Ich komm zu Deutschland , which was published by Ullstein Verlag in October 2016 .

Youtube channel

The video series ZUKAR is a joint project of the two filmmakers Firas Alshater from Syria and Jan Heilig from Germany.

The first video went online at the end of January 2016. It was originally intended as a test for a film project that should give refugees their own voice. The creators wanted to see how it would be accepted by the online community. The audience skyrocketed within a few days.

Since then, ZUKAR has been an independent project and is legally represented by Heilig's agency Okayfactor GmbH. In his videos, Alshater goes on a voyage of discovery: Who are the Germans? How do they tick? He describes the experiences from his perspective and comments on current topics. Humor is and will remain his main tool.

Currently 52 ZUKAR videos can be seen on the YouTube channel with a total of around 1.8 million views (as of September 2017).
