The island is approximately 30 miles long and the southwestern part is already under federal protection as part of Robert Moses State Park . Only very small sections of the narrow island around Saltaire and Fire Island Pines are excluded from the protected areas. There are 17 private communities within the boundaries of the Fire Island National Seashore, including Ocean Beach in addition to those already mentioned . Only two bridges lead to Fire Island. There are no public roads within the protected area. The Robert Moses Causeway leads to Robert Moses State Park on the west end of Fire Island, while the William Floyd Parkway leads to the east end of the island. Access is also possible by private boat or ferry from Patchogue , Sayville and Bay Shore on Long Island.

Fire Island National Seashore was established on September 11, 1964 as a National Park Service institution.

It puts the home and estate of William Floyd , a general of the American Revolutionary War and signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence, under protection . The William Floyd House is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located in Mastic Beach .
