Fyodor Zakharov ( Russian Фёдор Захарович Захаров , Ukrainian Федир Захарович Захаров Fedyr Sacharowytsch Sakharov * 5 September 1919 in Aleksandrovskoe, Smolensk , Russia ; † 29. September 1997 in Yalta , Crimea , Ukraine ) was a Russian-Ukrainian painter . Sakharov is considered to be one of the most important representatives of Russian and Ukrainian classical landscape painting as well as the realists . He has held the title of National Artist of Ukraine since 1978 and the Taras Shevchenko Prize since 1987 , the highest honor in the field of literature and art in Ukraine.

Life

Sakharov was born on September 5, 1919 in Alexandrowskoje, a small village in what is now Smolensk Oblast in Russia. He came from a farming family. In 1935 he received a scholarship to Moscow Kalinin Art Academy. He graduated with honors in 1941. Due to health problems, Sakharov was not called up for military service. In 1943 Sakharov continued his artistic training at the Surikov Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow . Sakharov was trained as an elite student by Aristarch W. Lentulow , one of the most famous representatives of the Russian avant-garde in the 1920s.

In 1950 Sakharov began his independent career as an artist in the era of totalitarian Soviet art, which was entirely subordinate to the interests of the Communist Party . Sakharov, however, had never created the so-called thematic commissioned works that extol the "happy life of the Soviet people". The young painter did not go down the systematic path that would have secured him quick recognition and material advantages. Sakharov's art was inspired by the great achievements of Russian and Ukrainian classical landscape painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which was characterized by the poetization of nature.

Sakharov's landscapes and still lifes met with great approval from viewers. His pictures have been exhibited in numerous galleries and national museums in Kiev , Moscow and Saint Petersburg . In 1978 he was awarded the title of National Artist of Ukraine and in 1987 the Taras Shevchenko Prize , the highest honor in the field of literature and art in Ukraine. Sakharov's paintings are valued by collectors in Russia and Ukraine, but also in salons in Western Europe.

Two landscapes particularly attracted the painter's heart: the Crimea, where he lived in Yalta, and the small Ukrainian Sedniv near Chernihiv , where he often traveled to paint. Taras Shevchenko , the great Ukrainian poet and painter, often came to the estate of landowner Andrij Lysohub in Sedniv in the 1840s .

On September 29, 1997, Fyodor Sakharov died after a long illness in Yalta and was buried there.

Prof. Olga Zhbankowa, Head of the Modern Ukrainian Art Department at the National Art Museum of Ukraine , describes Sakharov's work:

“Sakharov's art was inspired by the great achievements of Russian and Ukrainian classical landscape painting in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which was characterized by the sublime poetization of nature. His pictures are based on the harmonious combination of impressionistic feeling and representational painting. The informality and naturalness of the composition are organically combined in Sakharov's works with the expressiveness of the generalized forms and the strength of the harmony of light. With his broad, pasty brushstroke, the painter reliably depicts the shape of the object, reproducing the uniqueness of his fracture. And the mutual interaction of air and light. "
