Flame is a Finnish black and thrash metal band from Kuopio that was formed in 1998.

history

The band was founded in 1998, initially as a side project to their group Urn, by guitarist and singer Simo "Blackvenom" Rouvinen and drummer Mikko "Pimeä" Äimälä. In January 1999 bassist Kaitsu "Infernus" Pekkarnen, also an Urn member, joined the group. Later that year another member was added in the form of guitarist Tuomas "Crusher" Karhunen. The first gig was held in the Valhalla Metal Bar in Kuopio in the fall. In March of the following year the Demo 2000 demo was recorded in Studio Perkele and published later that year in an edition of 200 copies. On November 18, the band performed with Ancient Rites at the Valhalla Metal Bar. In 2001, unable to find a place to rehearse, the band spent the year planning another release. A split release with Devil Lee Rot followed in the summer of 2002 via Iron Pegasus Records . After a rehearsal room was found, the group wrote more new songs. In 2003 the band was planning on their debut album before they shrank towards the end of the year to a trio consisting of Rouvinen, Äimälä and Pekkarnen. In January 2004 the demo Promo 2004 was recorded and released, although it was originally intended only as a test recording for Iron Pegasus Records. In the spring of 2004, material for a split release with Ghastly, titled A Morbid Split and released on Asphyxiate Recordings , and the debut album was recorded at Editor's Spermaexplosion Studio . Concerts were also held. In the summer, songs were recorded for the sampler Metal On Metal - Finnish Underground Metal Compilation , which was released in 2005. Also in 2005, the debut album Into the Age of Fire was released on Iron Pegasus Records, while other concerts were played. The following year rehearsals continued and concerts with groups like Nifelheim took place in between. In 2007 the song Metallic Warfare was recorded for the sampler Hellbangers: Metal Forces . On June 1st the band could be seen at the 10th Hellbangers Festival in Koblenz . From October 26th to 28th a small tour through Finland was carried out with Root and In Aeternum . Hellbangers: Metal Forces was released in 2008 , in November of that year Juha “Noisehunter's Ghoul” Vainikainen joined as a live guitarist, before work on the second album began the following year. In 2011 the album March into Firelands was released via Primitive Reaction Records .

style

Jake from metalreviews.com wrote in his review of March into Firelands that the band played a mix of black and thrash metal. The group creates variety by mixing the two genres to varying degrees from song to song, occasionally bringing in Death Metal . However, Flame cannot compete with similar bands like Skeletonwitch or The Wretched End . Metalcrypt.com's Memnarch also reviewed the album, noting that the band played a similar mix of black and thrash metal as Nifelheim. Flame was influenced by bands like Bathory , Hellhammer and Discharge . He described the singing as a mixture of Quorthon and Jon Nödtveidt . Compared to songs by Nifelheim or Desaster , the band hardly succeeds in giving each song its own identity.
