Flavobacterium columnare is a type of bacteria .

features

The species Flavobacterium columnare is Gram-negative . The cells are rod-shaped, the length is between 0.3–0.5 and 3–10 µm. Filamentous shapes with a length of 25 µm also occur. There is no reduction in nitrate . Growth takes place at temperatures between 15 and 37 ° C, best growth takes place at 25–30 ° C. A NaCl content of 0–0.5% is tolerated. There are no flagella . However, the bacterium can move gliding ( gliding motility ). The GC content in the DNA is 32–33%.

Systematics

Flavobacterium columnar belongs to the family of Flavobacteriaceae , which in turn to the class bacteroidetes is provided.

Veterinary medicine

Flavobacterium columnare is pathogenic for fish . The bacterium is the cause of the columnar disease (also known as "cotton-wool disease"). It occurs mainly in temperate to warm fresh water. In the genus Flavobacterium , several bacteria are pathogenic for fish, examples are F. branchiophilum , F. hydatis , F. johnsoniae and F. psychrophilum .
