The Flechtheimspeicher is a listed granary on the south side of the port basin of the port of Münster in the immediate vicinity of the former coal bunker of the municipal utilities and the loading crane from 1962, the landmark of the port of Münster. The Rhenusspeicher classified as worthy of preservation , built by the Rhenus company with headquarters in Hamm , is attached to this building. The two storerooms are connected to each other on each floor via the common staircase. Different information can be found about the total square meter area, speaking of at least 1,720 square meters . It is also said that the Flechtheim Speicher covers 1,620 square meters on each of its five floors. Other sources speak of a usable area of around 8,600 square meters for both storage buildings, on which 12,000 tons of grain were once stored. The height of the individual floors of the Flechtheim warehouse is between 3.10 meters and 3.80 meters. The properties of the Rhenus and Flechtheim Speicher are located in corridor 148 on parcels 563 to 569, which cover a total of 13,600 square meters.

history

The five-story masonry building was built in 1899 for the Jewish grain wholesaler Emil Flechtheim (* 1850; † 1933), father of Alfred Flechtheim . The internationally active company M. Flechtheim and Comp. At that time was one of the largest companies in the grain trade and was based in Duisburg's inner harbor , among other places . At the beginning of the 1930s, the Rhenusspeicher was built, which has ten floors. At the time of development, as in 2012, the property was in a GI industrial area .

The capitals of the cast iron central supports carry a ceiling made of wooden planks and are reminiscent of Egyptian art . In addition, the roof structure was artfully worked. The Flechtheimspeicher was placed under monument protection because it is "one of the few remaining historical industrial buildings" as "evidence of the economic development of Münster at the beginning of the 20th century" . This means that it is considered to be a “building that is a reminder of the industrial past” of the city port and, according to an inventory of typical port properties in Münster from 2001, can be preserved.

The Flechtheimspeicher was bought by Rhenus in 1939. In 1969 Stadtwerke Münster was able to acquire the properties of the Flechtheim and the Rhenuss warehouse. According to entries in the land register, the land became the property of the Stadtwerke in 1968. Since 1999 the Flechtheimspeicher - like the adjacent Rhenusspeicher - has been owned by the municipal utilities . According to the Stadtwerke Münster, the Rhenus leasehold contract expired in 1996, which meant that the Stadtwerke became the owner of the two storage buildings. The Flechtheimspeicher was used until January 2007. After an architectural competition in 2007, the plan was to renovate the storage facility as a hotel or office space in the long term. This should remain in the possession of the Stadtwerke, not least in order not to impair the operation of the nearby Stadtwerke power station due to conversion measures to reduce noise emissions. This was ultimately the decisive factor for the office, archive and cultural use of the storage facility. In March 2012, the city company's supervisory board decided to convert the storage facility for this use. Stadtwerke is talking about 18 million euros from its own budget for the conversion of the storage building . In the years 2010 to 2012 the Flechtheimspeicher threatened to get into a structurally threatening state, the slow decline of which was only halted by the conversion. In February 2013, the municipal utility began to renovate the premises after dismantling the conveyor belts of the former grain store in the first step. The Wolfgang Borchert Theater moved in on September 6, 2014 with the performance of the opening piece “The Last Soirée”, which the Berlin author Arna Aley wrote on behalf of the WBT. The focus is on the namesake and previous owner of the store, the art dealer and publisher Alfred Flechtheim. Director Meinhard Zanger is the director.

The south side of the harbor basin has not yet been developed in terms of urban development. The former coal bunker of the Stadtwerke's coal-fired power station, which was shut down in 2005, is located on the southern end. In 2007 it was converted into a heat storage system for district heating of the new combined cycle power plant, so that it will remain. The port's landmark, an old unloading crane from 1962, is also located at Flechtheimspeicher.
