The Rhenusspeicher is a granary that is classified as worthy of preservation and was built by the Rhenus company with headquarters in Hamm . It is a reinforced concrete frame construction with clinker facing. It is located on the south side of the port basin of the port of Münster in the immediate vicinity of the former coal bunker of the municipal utilities and the loading crane from 1962, the landmark of the port of Münster. The Flechtheim warehouse was acquired by Rhenus in 1939. Rhenus memory originated as an extension to the now under monument protection standing Flechtheimspeicher . The two storerooms are connected to each other on each floor via the common staircase. Together, the two storage facilities have a floor space of around 8,600 square meters , on which 12,000 tons of grain were once stored. According to other sources, the area of the Rhenuss Speicher alone is over 80,000 square meters. The height of the individual floors is between 3.10 meters and 4.00 meters. The properties of the Rhenus and Flechtheim warehouse are located in corridor 148 on parcels 563 to 569, which cover a total of 13,600 square meters.

history

The Rhenusspeicher, which has ten floors, was built in 1939 as a grain silo storage facility. Other sources speak of 1930 as the year of construction. At the time of development, as in 2012, the property was in a GI industrial area . The building consists of nine regular floors. There is also an attic on the tenth floor . In addition, the building has a basement. The social rooms are located in the entrance area on the ground floor . Furthermore, 53 concrete silo funnels hang down from the ceiling on the ground floor. The ground floor and the seven floors above each have an area of 10,000 to 10,900 square meters. The stairwell extends to the ninth floor of the Rhenuss Speicher, which consists of a hall-like room. The granary was used for 68 years until Rhenus gave up the site in 2007. During this time, the grain was delivered by ship, which was temporarily stored in the silos in order to be filled into sacks and loaded onto trucks by hand.

In 1969, Stadtwerke Münster was able to acquire the Rhenus and Flechtheim storage sites. According to entries in the land register, the land became the property of the Stadtwerke in 1968. The Rhenusspeicher - like the adjacent Flechtheimspeicher - has been owned by the municipal utilities since 1999 . According to the Stadtwerke Münster, the Rhenus leasehold contract expired in 1996, which meant that the Stadtwerke became the owner of the two storage buildings. After an architectural competition in 2007, the plan was to renovate the storage facility as a hotel or office space in the long term. This should remain in the possession of the Stadtwerke, not least in order not to impair the operation of the nearby Stadtwerke power station due to conversion measures to reduce noise emissions. This was ultimately the decisive factor for the office, archive and cultural use of the storage facility. In March 2012, the city company's supervisory board decided to convert the storage facility for this use. Stadtwerke is talking about 18 million euros from its own budget for the conversion of the storage building . According to other sources, an investment of 10 million euros is necessary for the renovation .

The Wolfgang Borchert Theater will move from the north to the side of the port in the Rhenusspeicher. The foyer of the theater is to be set up in the Flechtheimspeicher .

The south side of the harbor basin has not yet been developed in terms of urban development. The former coal bunker of the Stadtwerke's coal-fired power station, which was shut down in 2005, is located on the southern end. In 2007 it was converted into a heat storage system for district heating of the new combined cycle power plant, so that it will remain. The landmark of the port, an old unloading crane from 1962, is also located at the Rhenusspeicher.

In May 2012, the Rhenusspeicher was used for an exhibition for the first time. To this end, Stadtwerke Münster invested a five-figure sum to renovate the premises. The port has existed since June 2012 as part of the Münster model , which was temporarily exhibited in the Rhenusspeicher on the south side of the central port .
