The spotted- tailed nightjar ( Hydropsalis maculicaudus , syn. Caprimulgus maculicaudus ) is a species of bird from the family of the nightjar (Caprimulgidae).

It occurs scattered in Bolivia , Brazil , Guyanas , Colombia , Mexico , Paraguay , Peru and Suriname as well as in northeast Argentina .

Their distribution area includes dry subtropical or tropical and occasionally moist or flooded grasslands up to 300 m in height.

description

The spotted-tailed nightjar is 19–22 cm tall, the male weighs between 28 and 35 g, the female between 26 and 39 g. The top is brown or gray-brown, the vertex black-brown with yellow-brown spots. The wings are darker, the chest mottled, belly to rump yellow-brown. The tail is quite angular with white wing band and white spots.

voice

The male's call is described as a repeated, high-pitched “t-seet” with different tones, usually called from a raised hide.

Way of life

The food consists of beetles , flies , moths , grasshoppers and dragonflies , which are preyed from the ground.

The breeding season is between late March and July in Mexico, between October and January in Suriname and probably between late February and May in Colombia.

Hazardous situation

The spotted nightjar is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
