Fred Ohms
Frederick D. "Fred" Ohms (* 1918 in Freeport, Nassau County (New York) ; † May 1956 in Mineola , Nassau County, New York) was an American jazz and studio musician ( trombone ).
Ohms worked in the New York jazz scene from the late 1990s, first in the orchestras of Les Brown , Eddie DeLange , Jan Savitt and with the Andrews Sisters ("Beer Barrel Polka", including with Vic Schoen and Billy Kyle ). After the war he was a member of Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians ; he also played a. a. with Roy Eldridge , Coleman Hawkins ( The Hawk in Hi-Fi (1956), with Billy Byers Orchestra), Peanuts Hucko , Eddie Condon , Joe Bushkin , Billy Butterfield , Quincy Jones , Anita O'Day , Eartha Kitt , Ella Fitzgerald , Gene Krupa ( Drummer Man ) and Manny Albam ( The Drum Suite ), most recently with Joe Newman and Andy Kirk . He died of complications from pneumonia.
As a member of the Bob Haggart Orchestra, he accompanied Ella Fitzgerald on her hit "That's My Desire"; the song hit # 3 on the Race Records chart in 1947 . The discographer Tom Lord lists his participation in 39 recording sessions between 1938 and 1956, u. a. with R&B and entertainment musicians such as Murray Arnold, Bernie Mann, Melvin Smith & Howard Biggs' Orchestra, Richard Maltby , Hal Schaefer and Julie Wilson .
