The Meat Banks ( Masné krámy in Czech ) are a restaurant in the listed historical meat banks in Krajinská ulice 13 in České Budějovice (Budweis) in the Czech Republic .

history

The meat banks originally stood on the main square of Budweis and were first mentioned in writing on June 24, 1336 when the city was flooded. On February 19, 1364, for hygienic reasons, Emperor Charles IV ordered the demolition of the wooden buildings on the town square and the construction of a successor building in the nearby Krajinská Street. In 1554 a brick building was erected, which served its original purpose for over 400 years and has been preserved in its shape to this day.

The customers entered the sales rooms through the gates on the east or west end and moved in the high central nave. The butchers' shops were in the low halls on either side, accessible to shoppers through the arcades of the inner high hall. There were two rows of independent delivery entrances on the two outer walls. The slaughterhouse was in the southern forecourt. The soup kitchen in the adjoining western corner house was called "Garkuchl".

After a new municipal slaughterhouse was built in the Prague suburbs (Pražské předměstí) in 1899, the structure and organization of the meat banks were repeatedly changed in the course of the 20th century. The individual cabins were converted into small shops or storage rooms. After 1945 the building was in a state of disrepair, so demolition was even considered. Finally, in 1953, the meat banks were rebuilt according to the plans of Jaroslav Fidra, and the “Masné krámy” restaurant was officially opened on October 1, 1954.

The building was badly damaged by the floods in Central Europe in 2002 , so it had to be closed. In the course of tough negotiations between the various owners and future tenants, the building of the former soup kitchen was outsourced and the independent restaurant U Tří sedláků (“To the three farmers”) started operating there. The meat banks themselves were only reopened on December 5th, 2007. Budweiser beer is served in the restaurant, in which the city of Budweis and the Budweiser Brewery are involved .

building

The building was erected in the 16th century in the form of a three-nave basilica . The high central nave has a gable roof , the two low side aisles have a pent roof. The eastern, classicist main entrance dates from 1830. Its two-part, stone Renaissance portal and the entire rear, western facade with battlements, loopholes and a gable made of dovetails have been preserved in the original. Inside you can still see the butchers' bunks, where nowadays there are separate seating areas.
