Florian Menz (Linguist)

Florian Menz (born July 13, 1960 in Bozen , South Tyrol, † June 30, 2017 in Vienna ) was an Austrian linguist and professor of linguistics at the University of Vienna .

Life

Florian Menz was born in Bolzano, South Tyrol in 1960 and attended elementary school and grammar school there ( Franziskanergymnasium in Bolzano ). After graduating from high school (with the highest possible number of points), he studied general and applied linguistics and sociology at the University of Vienna and at the Free University of Berlin. In 1984 he completed his diploma studies and in 1989 his doctoral studies with honors. From 1984 he taught at the University of Vienna and supervised numerous diploma theses and dissertations. At the same time he worked for more than twenty years in teacher training for various institutions, and established himself in various (also interdisciplinary) research projects as an expert in the field of applied linguistics, especially in the area of sociolinguistics . In 1999 Florian Menz completed his habilitation and was then appointed as associate professor for applied linguistics at the University of Vienna. Since 2014 Florian Menz has been the head of the Institute for Linguistics at the University of Vienna. He held this position until the end.

Scientific research and publication

Menz's research interests were, among other things, in the area of ​​organizational and institutional communication, especially in the area of ​​medical communication, and communication in commercial enterprises. In the 1980s and 1990s he conducted research (together with Ruth Wodak, among others ) in the context of the Viennese critical discourse analysis on the social and political discourse in Austria. His focal points were “Language and Ideology” and “Language and Power”, “Language and Prejudice” and dealing with minorities in terms of language policy. With his dissertation on doctor-patient communication, he laid a fundamental work on researching the doctor-patient relationship and thus gained notoriety beyond the boundaries of his research area.

Menz led numerous (often interdisciplinary) research projects on medical and health communication (including doctor-patient communication, pain communication, migration and medical communication, communication and psychiatry) and, with his research team, developed the online research database on doctor-patient interaction (APO-on ©). From 1984–2016 he established the research focus “Medical Communication” at the Institute for Linguistics at the University of Vienna. As an expert in the fields of organizational and institutional communication, he worked as a consultant for the national research and planning institute Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG). In addition, Florian Menz was active as a lecturer in the university and non-university environment and was most recently active in the further and advanced training of psychiatrists.
