Florian Znaniecki (born January 15, 1882 in Świetniki , † March 23, 1958 in Urbana (Illinois) ) was a Polish sociologist and philosopher and did research in the USA. He was the 44th president of the American Sociological Association .

In the extensive study The Polish Peasant in Europe and America , presented with William I. Thomas from 1918 to 1920 , he dealt with the surprising fact that - colloquially - devout Catholic Polish villagers in Chicago largely adapted after a phase of disorganization Industrial townspeople were. In Cultural Sciences (1952) he examined the methodological foundations of inductive generalization in cultural studies.

Life

Znaniecki studied at the universities of Warsaw (where he was expelled from the Russian administration), in Geneva and at the Sorbonne and received his doctorate in Krakow in 1914. As the head of a Polish emigrant organization, he met WI Thomas on a trip to Europe. In 1919 Thomas brought him to the University of Chicago as a lecturer . From 1920 to 1939 he was a professor at the University of Poznan . In 1936 he returned to Poland, when the war broke out he was on a ship heading home, but had to turn back. Since 1940 he lived again in the USA and became a professor at the University of Chicago. His wife Eileen was briefly imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp.
