Florian von Macchio (born August 14, 1802 in Zadar , Croatia ; † February 7, 1895 in Baden near Vienna ) was a noble Austrian officer, most recently a lieutenant field marshal .

origin

He came from the Macchio family, originally from Lombardy and raised to the Austrian nobility in 1807, and was the son of the Austrian court war secretary Johann von Macchio (1771-1853) and his wife Elisabeth, née Elisabeth. Babel von Fronsberg (1779–1855).

Live and act

Florian von Macchio attended the 1st kuk Staatsgymnasium Graz from 1813 and joined the Austrian army in 1821 as a law graduate . In 1830 he was captain and adjutant of the regiment commander in Infantry Regiment No. 31. Apparently he was also interested in history and genealogy, because that year he made a huge one for his commander, Count August Georg zu Leiningen-Westerburg-Neuleiningen (1770-1849) Family tree with historical notes, carried out by an ensign Joseph Rech, as an artistic, brightly painted canvas panel approx. 4 meters long and 2 meters wide. This hangs today in the museum of Grünstadt , the birthplace of the count. It bears the signature “Florian v. Macchio KK Hauptmann in the 31st Graf Leininingen Westerburg Lin. Inft. Regiment and Adjutant Sr. Exaltation of the regiment owner construxit. ”In 1838 Macchio was promoted to major in the same regiment .

In April 1849 he was promoted to major general , in 1852 to field marshal lieutenant and in 1857 he became the owner of the kk infantry regiment "Crown Prince of Prussia" No. 20. On September 1, 1861, the officer retired. By awarding the Commander's Cross of the Leopold Order on March 15 of the same year, the Emperor raised him to the status of hereditary baron of Austria-Hungary . He also wore the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class with war decoration and the Austrian Military Merit Cross , also with war decoration. In the Crimean War , as division commander in 1854, he was responsible for the non-fighting occupation of Little Wallachia .

As a pensioner, the baron lived in Graz and belonged to a. the Historical Association for Styria .

Florian von Macchio was married to Angelica Antonia geb. von Mylius, daughter of the Austrian officer Eberhard Gereon von Mylius. The marriage resulted from their son Karl von Macchio (1859–1945), Austrian diplomat.
