Floribert Bwana Chui bin Kositi (born June 13, 1981 in Goma , Democratic Republic of the Congo , † July 7, 2007 there ) was a Congolese customs officer who was murdered because of his belief and incorruptibility. The beatification process for him has begun.

Live and act

Floribert Bwana Chui bin Kositi came from a wealthy background and studied law and economics, which he graduated in 2006 with a degree in economics. During his student days he joined the community of Sant'Egidio . He volunteered to take care of the street children, who are called Maibobo in the Congo , as well as orphans.

He began his working life in the Congolese capital Kinshasa , where he worked as a damage inspector at the domestic customs and goods control authority Office Congolais de Contrôle . He was later transferred to their office in Goma. One of the tasks of the authority is to ensure the proper food supply for the population and, for example, to destroy spoiled goods. He was the head of the Goma office.

Floribert was Catholic and engaged.

Attempts at bribery, kidnapping and murder

Corrupt company employees tried to bribe him with amounts of up to 3,000 euros to have a cargo of spoiled rice released so that it could be sold. He feared for the lives of the consumers and refused the money and was not intimidated by threats. Then he let the rice burn. He justified this with his belief, which forbade him to endanger the lives of other people. Then rather his own, he says.

On July 7th, 2007, he was dragged into a car while leaving a store, and two days later the body covered with traces of torture was found. Floribert was 26 years old.

Aftermath

His case is regarded worldwide as a model for the incorruptible civil servant who acts on the basis of religious belief.

In 2014, Francesco de Palma published a book about his life in an Italian publisher.

His Bible can be found as a relic in the church of San Bartolomeo on the Tiber Island in Rome . It can be seen in a side chapel of this church dedicated to the martyrs of the 20th and 21st centuries.

On December 9, 2018, Bishop Théophile Kaboy Ruboneka of Goma completed the diocesan process to initiate the beatification process and forwarded the records to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints for further examination .
