History and description
In 2004 the government put the airport out to tender for privatization. In the early years of the 21st century, Carmelo Airport was the Uruguayan airport outside the Montevideo metropolitan area that recorded the most flight movements. In 2009, a total of 2700 aircraft movements (2000 international flights, 700 domestic flights) with 2350 passengers (1900 international, 450 national) were recorded. This makes the airport the fourth most important in the country after Carrasco , Punta del Este and Melilla . The Hotel Four Season , located near the airport on Ruta 21, is of immense strategic importance . This serves as a tourist attraction for numerous domestic as well as foreign tourists, especially from overseas. Tourists from Canada, USA, Finland, Austria, Mexico and Great Britain are explicitly mentioned in this context.
Carmelo Airport has a 1,400-meter-long, grass-covered runway. The flight connection time to Buenos Aires is around 15 minutes.
