The Resolute Bay Airport ( IATA: YRB ; ICAO: CYRB ) is located near Resolute Bay , Nunavut , and operated by the territorial government.

Possible extension

The Royal Canadian Air Force is considering a major expansion of the airport to use it as a key base for Arctic operations. The extension would include a runway of 3000 meters, the asphalting of the site, new hangars , refueling facilities and more.

The site would also contain infrastructure for rescue missions.

In the past, the airport was served by some airlines, which offered direct flights to cities such as Edmonton , Montreal , Ottawa , Winnipeg and Yellowknife . These airlines usually used Boeing 727 or 737 aircraft for flights to Resolute Bay .

Resolute Bay, which is located north of the Arctic Circle , is the northernmost flight destination in Canada with regular passenger flights.

Incidents

On August 20, 2011, a Boeing 737-200 operated by Canadian First Air ( aircraft registration number C-GNWN ) flew just under two kilometers from the airport into a 120 meter high hill. The machine was on First Air Flight 6560 , which came from Yellowknife as a charter flight . Twelve passengers were killed.
