The Seletar Airport (Engl. Seletar Airport ) is the oldest airport in the Asian city-state Singapore . So far it has mainly served general aviation and is the centerpiece of Seletar Aerospace Park , an industrial park with a focus on companies from the aviation industry. In addition, from the end of 2018 he is to take over the regional flights with Changi's turboprop planes in order to use their slots for larger aircraft.

history

RAF Seletar

The area where the airport is located today was selected as a future base by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) back in 1921 . RAF Seletar was initially a base for land and seaplanes or flying boats, on which the first Southamptons Supermarine arrived in 1928 . In addition to the military tasks, the airport was also used for civil purposes between 1930 and 1937 until the opening of the first civil airport in Kallang.

In the run-up to the conquest of Singapore by Japan , the place was bombed by the Japanese in 1940. At that time there were a squadron of Catalina flying boats and two squadrons of Vildebeest torpedo bombers . The planes were evacuated shortly before the approach of the Japanese forces and during the occupation of Singapore, Seletar was used by the Japanese naval air force.

After the end of the war, the field was used again by the RAF, until the end of the 1950s, among other things, Beaufighter , Spitfire and Mosquito fighter planes were flown. In the 1960s these were replaced by Beverly and Whirlwind transport aircraft and helicopters . In March 1971, RAF Seletar was closed.

Seletar Airport

After the British withdrew, Seletar Airbase was still used by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), which was under construction . Seletar Airport, as it is today, has only been used for civil purposes for a long time. It was initially operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore before being acquired by the Changi Airport Group in 2009 . In addition to general aviation aircraft , there were initially only a few short-haul passenger flights to Malaysian islands.

The Seletar Aerospace Business Park was built in the neighborhood around 2010 . For this purpose, among other things, the runway was extended by 250 meters to 1,840 meters. As a result, aircraft such as the 737 or A320 Seletar can now also be used without weight restrictions. Well-known companies based here include ATR , Airbus , Airbus Helicopters , Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney .

In 2016, construction began on a new passenger terminal with a capacity of 700,000 passengers per year. The terminal was completed in July 2018 and is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2018. Firefly was the first to announce that it would move its flights from Changi Airport to Seletar.
