Approach to runway 34L at Schänis airfield

The Schänis ( ICAO code LSZX ) is a glider - airfield in Switzerland . It is located in the area of the St. Gallen municipality of Schänis in the Linth plain directly on the railway line between Uznach and Ziegelbrücke .

In Switzerland, the Schänis airfield is the largest location for gliding; Over 150 active pilots are organized in various glider groups. Among other things, Schänis offers the advantage of being in the immediate vicinity of the Alps , of not being affected by the control zone of the comparatively nearby Zurich Airport and of maintaining daily flight operations. In 2007 and 2009, the Swiss Gliding Championships took place in Schänis. Schänis is also a regular venue for regional championships.

Since the summer of 2008 the Swiss Air Force has occasionally used the airspace northeast of Schänis for its Speer training room for Pilatus PC-21 flights. The originally planned minimum airspace height of 8,000 feet was increased to 10,000 feet (around 3,050 meters) above sea level after protests by glider pilots.

Various glider groups are based at Schänis Airfield, in particular the large glider group Lägern (SG Läger), which was founded in 1935 as the glider group Dübendorf in Dällikon in Zurich at the foot of the Lägern , but has been based at Zurich Airport in Schänis since 1965 due to the growing air traffic. The Schänis Oldtimer Club (OCS) with vintage gliders and the Swiss Aerobatic Gliding Association (SAGA) are also based in Schänis .

There are two runways 16/34 at Schänis airfield : the main runway 16R / 34L with a length of 520 m and a width of 15 m and the somewhat shorter and narrower auxiliary runway 16L / 34R. Both runways have hard surfaces so that flight operations can take place in any weather.
