It borders on the west by the FGE Schlei / Trave , on the south by the FGE Elbe and on the southeast by the FGE or to which the waters of the island of Usedom , with the exception of the tributaries of Peenestrom belong. Overall, the river basin district is around 21,000 km², but the land area is only around 13600 km².

The river basin district is organizationally divided into the four processing areas Warnow, Peene, Coastal Area West and Coastal Area East.
