Cracked a gaff rigged fly tour

The Fly Tour , often also called Flytour, is a Dutch, open sailing boat with a fixed keel. It was and is built as a high-rigged or gaff-rigged version, both from wood and from GRP. The yardstick count is 116.

properties

The boat is a gaff rigged or high rigged sloop . The 6.4 m long and 2.1 m wide hull is made in round frame construction and has a firmly bolted keel with a keel bomb . The rudder is put through.

There are boats in wood construction as well as boats with a hull made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) and a deck and construction made of marine plywood. Very rarely do you come across specimens made entirely of GRP. Some models with a GRP hull have buoyancy bodies that are firmly laminated in the aft and foredeck, making them virtually unsinkable.

The sails consist of a mainsail with an area of approx. 12 m², a genoa with 7 m² and a jib with 4 m².

The shallow draft of 90 cm and the very easy to lay mast make the boat particularly suitable for the Dutch inland waters with many bridges. Due to the cockpit that is not self-draining, it is only partially suitable for open areas .

It is a very spacious touring boat for its size, which with a suitable deck tent is also suitable for overnight stays by two people and possibly smaller children. Sailing is possible with up to 4 adults and 2 children.

The Valk is a similar open Dutch sailing boat. A somewhat smaller gaff rigged keelboat of Dutch origin is the zestienkwadraat (16 m²), which sails in Germany under the name BM-Jolle .

history

Rigging a gaff rigged fly tour

The Fly Tour was designed around 1960 by GJM Luyten, who also designed the Schakel . He wanted to design an open keelboat that is manoeuvrable enough to be able to cruise well in narrow fairways, should provide as fast as a Valk and as much space as a BM dinghy. However, it should sail significantly less wet than the BM dinghy, which is why the forward stem is characteristically pulled upwards.

The Fly Tour was built by various yacht builders over the years, and DIY kits were also sold. Depending on the buyer's wishes, the boats were built with gaff sails or Bermudarigg, so that nowadays both versions can be found with a similar frequency. The Fly Tour is currently being built by the Möllers yacht yard in Buitenkaag, where you can also rent this type of boat.
